Trauma and Mouth Guards
Why are mouthguards important for sports?
As pediatric dentists we see trauma to the head and neck particularly the teeth due to contact sports several times a month. Athletes are 60 times more likely to sustain damage to the teeth when not wearing a protective mouthguard. The cost of a mouthguard is minimal compared to loosing or maintaining a broken tooth.
Why wouldn’t an athlete choose to wear a mouthguard?
Well athletes commonly complain that mouthguards are bulky and make it difficult to breathe and speak properly, but they are typically talking about over the counter boil and bite mouthguards that they make at home. Boil and bite at home mouthguards are better than no mouthguard, but at some dental offices including Smiles In Motion, we make custom fit mouthguards. Custom fit are made from an exact impression of the athletes mouth providing a better fitting less bulky mouthguards with superior comfort. Athletes find it much easier to speak and breath with a custom fit mouthguard. Custom fit mouthguards are made of a special plastic that is better able to withstand impact, absorb shock and help to prevent injuries to the head, neck and teeth.
